Christmas 2011

As the snowflakes are drifting down outside our window, we are enjoying our family here at Christmas Time! The Resort is now closed until spring while Ted is begining our 'To-Do List' for the cabins. We had a great time while the kids were here. We played charades, card games, Wii, while eating lots and lots of food. We hope you had a great holiday season and we wish you the best in twenty-twelve.

2011 Spring Greetings

I hesitate to say Spring, as it snowed right before Easter!  Hopefully, by the time this reaches you, we will have warm temps and can hope that Spring is really here to stay.   The animals have returned….the trumpeter swans even came gliding in on the ice about a month ago.   Ted feeds the muskrats all winter, so the hole he chopped served  them as well.   About two weeks ago the deer from last year showed up, so Ted is busy with his feeding again.  We have as high as seven does and fawns here at one time.   We see the robins, tree swallows, finches, and sometimes woodpeckers.   We got a great picture of a pileated woodpecker on a birch tree right outside our garage.  Now, if we get nice weather, the gravel roads will dry out and we won’t feel like we are navigating through a mine field every time we drive to town.

We had a fairly mild winter for the UP.   We were way behind in snowfall and cold temps.   Our unofficial record of snow (we measure in the driveway) was less than 100”.   I think Ted blew out the driveway maybe 4 times.

Christmas brought both the girls and families here.    Dana, Jim, Brandon, and Colby came from Iowa, and Jill, Scott, Wyatt, Hannah, Dalaney, and Scotty from Crystal Falls.    We all stayed here in the log house and were quite comfy.   We had snow so they kids could tube and play outside.   The guys also got the vintage snowmobile we acquired from a man at our church running, so that was a big hit.   We took it to Thunder Bowl so the kids could be driven back up the hill after sledding down.     Brandon celebrated his 16th birthday and Dana and Jim their 20th wedding anniversary.   It was great having everyone here.

Our two big trips before winter were to Iowa for my 50th high school reunion in September.   That was a fun weekend seeing classmates and catching up on all their news.   Then in October, we picked up Ted’s sister in IN and drove south to Indianapolis to see her son, then on to Chauvin, LA to see her daughter, granddaughter, and new great granddaughter.   We stayed a week and saw the sights…..a plantation,  the coast where BP had a clean up operation from the oil spill, and a day in New Orleans, right down in the center of the Mardi Gras area.   The weather was super warm and we really enjoyed the area, good food, and seeing the sights.

Ted is working in Maple cabin right now.   He is going to do some rewiring and put in some new walls and floors.  I’m the “clean up crew”.   As soon as it gets warmer, I will start to get the cabins ready for our 48th season of business.   Wow, that doesn’t seem possible!  We have met many wonderful people over those seasons.   Some are no longer with us, but we sure have some great memories.   We have some third generations who still visit.   We will be ready for the Wednesday night potluck and the fellowship  we share around the campfire.   Peace and quietness is awaiting you.   We hope you have made your reservations, but if it’s not in your plans this summer, we wish you good health and happiness.
